Select New coupon
Setting one up takes two steps. This one is the discount itself. The second is the promotion codes people type at checkout to claim it.

Under Start with one of these, take a template, or ignore them
Each template fills in the boxes below with a common discount, and you can change any of it afterwards. Hide these suggestions takes the templates away for good.
-
Choose Percentage off or Fixed amount off
Then enter the Percent or the Amount. A discount that covers a whole order completes it as a free order, and the code still counts as redeemed. On an event that takes more than one currency, Amount is a row with a column per currency, your own first. A fixed amount comes off orders in a currency only when you've filled that currency's box in, so leave one blank and the code does nothing for a buyer paying in it. A percentage works in every currency and has no extra boxes.
-
Under Applies, choose To each ticket or To the entire order
A fixed amount set against the whole order is spread across the tickets in it.
-
Under Ticket types, keep All ticket types or choose Only certain ticket types
All ticket types also covers types you add later. Choosing certain ones fixes the discount to the types you tick, and at least one has to be ticked. A buyer who later swaps to another ticket keeps the discount on the new one only if you ticked that type too.
The same thing is set from the other end, on a ticket type's own page under Coupons. See Choose which coupons come off a ticket. -
Fill in Discount starts and Discount ends, or leave them blank
Both dates are optional, and they're in the event's own timezone. They cover every code under this coupon, including codes you add later. A buyer who types a code before the start is told which day the discount opens. After the end, they're told it's expired.
-
Give it a Name, or leave it blank
The name is how you find this coupon in your own lists and reports. It's also where the first suggested code comes from on the next step, so "Early bird" arrives there as EARLY-BIRD.
-
Select Next: promotion codes
The coupon is saved, and the second step opens. See Hand out codes.
